It evolved from ancient Hindu musical traditions originating in the late 12th and early 13th centuries, and is the oldest musical form still in practice today. In contrast to northern styles, Carnatic music is more thoroughly oriented to the voice. It incorporates the basic principles of the Indian raga (melody) and tala (rhythm) through which the rich vocal expression of Indian classical singing derives its unique place in the world.
