PJAZZ JUNETEENTH JAZZ SPLASH FESTIVAL

Saturday, June 15, 2013 - Sunday, June 16, 2013 from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM

ARCOSANTI (exit 263/I-17, Mayer, AZ

The Prescott Jazz Society and Arcosanti (www.arcosanti.org) have formed a unique partnership that celebrates the very best of African-American artistic freedom and democracy in America by bringing local, regional, and national performersartists, local businessesand hotels in support of the 15th annual two-day (10 performance) PJAZZ Juneteenth Jazz Splash Festival and Ethnic Arts Fair. Guest artists include Richie Cole, a legendary alto sax player known worldwide http://richiecole.com/Richie_Cole/HOME.html), and Billy Mitchell, award-winning piano man with a sense of romance and groove (www.billy-mitchell.com), Harold Land Jr., Milt Cannon. NOTE: Billy Mitchell has to leave after Saturday to join Kenny Burrell for a gig…

Returning to support the festival are the Adam’s brothers who were recipients of PJAZZ Benefit Concert monies earlier this year to help these young pro’s and their group re-locate to the ‘Big Apple.’ All of the playing these guys have been doing with New York musicians is sure to have made them ‘hotter’ than usual…and they ARE hot! Personally, I’d love to hear some of their stories too. Like, what’s it like in the ‘Big Apple’ these days? I do know that they just finished a performance at Lincoln Center. Ah, but let’s get back to Juneteenth for now…

Traditionally, the Juneteenth celebration symbolizes the joy and the responsibility of a call to freedom for African-Americans. Yet, it is also a call to freedom for us all in that we have an opportunity and the responsibility to assist in developing a more inclusive, sustainable, and equitable society. These values lie at the heart of the Arcosanti-urban village experiment and include the essence of living in harmonious relationship with our environment. The beautiful shaded open-air ‘Colli Soleri’ (wife of the late architect Paulo Soleri) amphitheater has a wading stream flowing in front of it…perfect for wading and dancing at the same time.

Vendors include some ‘down-home’ barbeque along with New Orleans style red beans and rice in the Arcosanti Café. Beer & wine are available in the Arcosanti Café as well. Displays include some astounding silver jeweler creations, African art pieces, baskets, masks, drums, hats, clothing, and incense.

Festival Hours are: 11am-11pm, Saturday & 11am-7pm, Sunday. The festival opening will start with a prayer by Minister Michael Cannon at 11am Saturday. Then a performance by the St. Luke’s Ebony Christian Church Praise Dancers will be followed by vocalists Ray and Marilyn Carter. After that, the schedule is non-stop entertainment until 11pm. Billy Mitchell will fire up the stage on Saturday. Pianist and son of jazz great, Harold Land Jr. will perform the Cabaret Show for VIP ticket holders. Richie Cole plays Saturday afternoon with Brian Messenger and the Adams Brothers, plus the Ron Hart & Gary Fitzgerald Duo. The traditional “Freedom Dance” starts at dusk under the Vault. Prescott’s own ‘Six Feet’ with Rick Cucuzzo performing their final engagement together will take the vault stage and light up the dance party with a movin’ groove to funk-fusion and lots of original compositions. And of course, the traditional ‘limbo contest’ will bring us the 2013 ‘low bar’ winner. Lots of fun, smiles, and beats for the feet.

The Sunday morning, 11am, prayer will open the festival followed by the alto madness of the Richie Cole Ensemble. Cole has a rep for raising the bandstand with his tone, fire, and wit…in other words, HE SWINGS, BABY. VIP ticket holders will enjoy a Sunday Cabaret show of ‘purebeam jazz’ by Ron Hart & Gary Fitzgerald. Milt Cannon will close the 2-day stage performances as he lays down his soulful tenor sax sounds with the Giants of Jazz Band. And Rick Cucuzzo with his new jazz-fusion band IMPACT! on the Vault ‘dance’ stage will close out this year’s freedom celebration. This is a very special event at a very special place. Grab your family and friends and head on up…we’ll be happy to see you!
