Prescott schools to celebrate International Walk to School Day

Monday, October 05, 2009

From a Safe Routes to Schools press release

(Prescott, AZ) Mile High Middle, Taylor Hicks Elementary, Mountain Oak Charter, Miller Valley Elementary, and Lincoln Elementary schools will be joining schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day.

Prescott's third annual Walk to School Day events will see over 500 students, parents, teachers, and community leaders join in celebrating this time honored tradition. And while each year brings more participants, this year has some other fun additions.

Each school will gather at a central location, receive free tee shirts, and display school banners as they take a fun, mass walk to school. Some schools will provide free breakfast as an additional incentive for students who walk.

New this year is the completed section of Greenways Trail that runs from Granite Creek Park through the Mile High Middle School campus to Aubrey Street. Joined by the new City of Prescott volunteer park rangers, Mile High Middle School will take their walk off road and on to campus the Greenway.

Prescott Walk to School day events will be held:

Taylor Hicks Elementary, October 2, 7:45AM, beginning at 1455 Willow Creek RD. Miller Valley Elementary, October 6, 7:45 AM, beginning at the Prescott Rodeo Grounds. Prescott Mile High Middle School, October 7, 7:00AM, beginning at Granite Creek Park. Lincoln Elementary, October 8, 7:45AM, beginning at the Courthouse Square. Mountain Oak Charter School, October 23, 7:30 AM, beginning at Granite Creek Park.

Prescott Alternative Transportation (PAT) organizes Walk to School Day events as part of its Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program. PAT offers coordination, school banners, and tee shirts to its SRTS partner schools.

SRTS partners Yavapai County Community Health Services Education staff and Prescott Police will join PAT to offer additional health and safety education to participants of the walk to school day events.

In the U.S., International Walk to School Day is expected to include over 5,000 schools from all 50 states. Walkers from the U.S. will join children and adults in 40 countries around the world.

PAT's Safe Routes to School program is funded by federal highway monies administered by ADOT. For additional local information, please contact Paul Katan at (928) 708-0911.
