Library Uses a Little "Black Magic" for New Speedy Check-Out

Monday, April 26, 2010

FROM A PRESCOTT PUBLIC LIBRARY PRESS RELEASE

There is Magic at Prescott Public Library in the form of a black pad at every Self Check station. Place up to 10 books on the pad and they are checked out to you in a flash. Although the fun and speedy library checkout process feels like magic, it is actually the librarys new RFID (radio frequency identification) technology at work.

Toni Kaus, Prescott Public Library Director explains, "RFID also reduces repetitive motion for staff, and speeds up check-in of library materials, meaning returned books are quickly available for the next reader. Library patrons, staff and volunteers think it's just great."

RFID technology also powers new security gates that alert library users and staff if materials leave the building without going through the check-out process.

Kaus goes on to explain the new Self Checks and security gates are just Phase One of Prescott Public Library's RFID project. Next year the library will add Automated Materials Handling equipment that uses RFID technology to check in and even sort books, DVDs and other library materials. Kaus says, "Library use is at an all-time high, and library staff like to be out helping the public as much as possible. When automation can actually make our jobs easier, safer and faster, of course we want it."

See the magic yourself. RFID is fun and fast. Just head over to Prescott Public Library and check it out.
