At their Tuesday May 7, 2013 Workshop, the Prescott City Council recognized Prescott local Cason Murphy for his volunteer efforts, which earned him the Governor's Volunteer Service Award in the National Service Member category. Murphy was chosen out of 16 different nominees and was first honored at the Governor's Volunteer Service Awards luncheon, April 26, 2013.

Cason Murphy has served as an AmeriCorps State member with Community Counts and has served two terms with Serve Yavapai AmeriCorps as Technical Director at the Prescott Center for the Arts (PCA). In addition, his volunteer work at PCA has logged hundreds of hours directing and acting in PCA shows. During his off hours, he created PCA Goes Green, a recycling program and Theatrics Theater, supporting new play development by emerging artists, theatrical promotion, and educational opportunities.

Murphy has also worked on all National Days of Service providing opportunities for the community at large to participate in theater, music, dance, visual arts classes and workshops. He created and developed Team Tech, a service-learning project that grew to over 40 volunteers and taught all backstage aspects of theater including sound, lighting, set construction and stage management. Murphy's main stage show productions raised funds for youth scholarships, reader's theater programs, and the Young Playwrights Festival for K-12.

According to Councilman Chris Kuknyo, "Prescott residents have a strong spirit of volunteerism. Cason exemplifies that spirit through community service efforts that make the lives of his fellow residents better. We are fortunate that he calls Prescott home."
