City of Prescott Thanks Speaker Tobin, Senator Pierce, Representative Fann and Governor Brewer for Their Support

Monday, April 14, 2014

The City of Prescott is extremely grateful for the leadership of Speaker Andy Tobin and the support of Senator Steve Pierce and Representative Karen Fann for securing funding that will help Prescott cover the cost of the death benefits resulting from the tragic loss of 19 of the City's Granite Mountain Hotshots.

The City also thanks Governor Jan Brewer for her support and for signing into law HB 2703 2014-2015; general appropriations, which will provide $5 million to the Public Safety Personnel Retirement System (PSPRS) Prescott Fire Department account over the next five years.

This appropriation will significantly offset the increase in the unfunded actuarial liability arising from approximately $5.2 million in line-of-duty death benefits by alleviating 24 years of anticipated payments. This assistance will help the City recover from the unprecedented, substantial liabilities resulting from the worst wildfire tragedy since 1933. The emotional and financial toll resulting from this tragedy has created uncertainty and concern about the financial future of the City.

"Thank you Speaker Tobin, Senator Pierce, Representative Fann and Governor Brewer for looking after the citizens of Prescott in the wake of this loss," said Mayor Marlin Kuykendall.
